Citation: Fukuda, K., & Geller, E. H. (in preparation). The role of refutation and surprise in addressing misconceptions.
Research Question:
What is the effect of surprise, confusion, and confidence on
learning, and correcting misconceptions, within multimedia platforms ?
Process:
Refutation texts are texts which present accurate information in the
context of a common misconception. These texts known to be a better at
inducing conceptual change than standard expository text. We
investigated the means by which refutation texts correct misconceptions.
Participants were taught on a topic ripe with misconception: the seasons.
We measured learning transfer (i.e. the ability to apply learned abstract
concepts to novel questions and/or situations) as well as levels of
surprise, confusion, and confidence throughout the lesson.
Responsibilities:
In addition to running participants and scoring participants
responses in terms of learning transfer, I was responsible for creating
content for the learning transfer section of the experiment. The questions I
designed were curated to address participants ability to combine and
discriminate between critical concepts to answer novel questions as well
as correct former misconceptions.
